If I could offer one tip or lesson to anyone looking to improve golf I would tell them to have fun on the course. Sure we all want to play better and we’ll go to great lengths to do so but at the end of the day it’s all about having fun and enjoying the time on the course. For whatever reason it is you like to play the game, focus on why that is and remember that throughout your round. The more we focus on trying to play really good, the less we focus on enjoying the game and why we like to play.
Enjoy the course and how special course architecture is, after all, it’s you against the course. Enjoy your playing partners and the comradery. Enjoy this great game that brings so many wonderful people and opportunities into our lives. Enjoy a game that people of all ages can play. Enjoy hitting that one amazing shot that keeps you coming back. Enjoy hitting a terrible shot because you could be at work or in plenty of worse places.
Go back and think about your best rounds and chances are you were probably having a lot of fun that day. Now go back and think about the bad rounds and chances are you were not having fun that day. So the next time you are playing a round that isn’t going your way, sit back, relax and enjoy whatever it is that brings you to the game and forget about how bad your playing because no matter what, nobody quits this addicting game cold turkey and you’ll be back on the first tee in no time!
Have fun first and lower scores will follow.
