Today’s instruction will focus on the most important fundamental and how to grip a golf club.
Correct Golf Grip
When referring to the ‘the grip’ I am speaking of how our hands hold the club and not the actual rubber thing on the end of the club. It is the only thing connecting us to the club and if correct, it will help us hit the ball much straighter and longer. If it’s weak or strong it can cause off line shots. A neutral position with the hands on the club is what we’re ideally looking for but we don’t want to be too neutral. Also, if you hold the club with the incorrect amount of pressure the results will be poorly struck shots. See the pictures below for what a neutral grip looks like.
You can check to see if your hands are at a neutral position by looking into a mirror. Essentially the lines in between your thumb and index finger should align to the opposite shoulder as showcased by the red lines I have drawn. It’s easier to see what I mean by looking at the bottom hand. This next picture has my top hand alone on the club to see how the gap in between my thumb and index finger align to my right shoulder.
Once again if you need clarification, please post a comment and I will be happy to answer it promptly.
Now I will talk about how exactly you should hold onto the club with your hand. Below is a picture of how to properly hold onto the club.
Notice how I am holding onto the club with my fingers and not my palm.
Without a proper golf grip in place we will struggle to find any consistency and will be creating other bad habits in our swing. If it is poor and are hitting good shots then we are compounding the problem by doing something else wrong during the swing to create good shots. I highly suggested looking at how you hold the club no matter what type of player you are and accessing if it is good or needs some work.
There are also different ways we can attach our hands to the golf club to ensure we have the correct golf grip. You can interlock, overlap or hold the club with 10 fingers like a baseball player holds a bat. See the pictures below for these 3 types. Note that there is no right or wrong way, just select the one that feels the most comfortable.

I find the ten finger grip more comfortable for Tee shots, and use the interlocking grip for the short game shots, where it gives me better control.
I haven’t heard of many players doing that David but it’s all about what works the best and feels comfortable! Thanks for the comment, hope you enjoy the site.
